Magnetic Bearing Air Compressor Achieves Over 25% Energy Savings in a Coal Mine Project

Project Background

In the mining industry, reliable and clean compressed air is essential for safe and efficient operations. Traditional screw air compressors are widely used in coal mines, but they often face challenges such as high energy consumption, frequent maintenance, and limited air purity.

To improve the efficiency of its compressed air system and ensure safe underground operations, a large coal mine project in North China introduced the Sopower magnetic bearing air compressor solution.

The system is mainly used to deliver clean, oil-free compressed air to underground mining areas, providing stable power for pneumatic tools and equipment.

Existing System Conditions

Before the upgrade, the compressed air system at the site consisted of:

  • Three 200 kW screw air compressors (two operating and one standby)

Although the system met basic operational requirements, several issues remained:

  • High energy consumption

  • Frequent maintenance requirements

  • Limited efficiency under varying load conditions

To address these challenges, the project aimed to adopt a more energy-efficient and reliable air compression technology.

Sopower Magnetic Bearing Compressor Solution

Sopower provided a 250 kW magnetic bearing air compressor, which was installed and put into operation earlier this year at the project site.

Main technical specifications include:

  • Rated power: 250 kW

  • Working pressure: 800 kPa

  • Maximum speed: 45,000 r/min

By using magnetic bearing technology, the compressor eliminates mechanical friction, enabling oil-free operation, high efficiency, and low maintenance requirements.

Operational Performance

After a period of stable operation, the system demonstrated excellent performance.

Key results include:

  • One magnetic bearing air compressor successfully replaced two screw compressors

  • The system still required intermittent proportional valve venting

  • Operational data was recorded through the site’s automatic monitoring system

Based on the accumulated loading time and power consumption data, the new system achieved:

More than 25% energy savings compared with the original screw air compressor system.

This result clearly demonstrates the energy-saving advantages of magnetic bearing compressor technology in industrial compressed air applications.

Value for the Mining Industry

This project shows that magnetic bearing air compressors can successfully enter application areas traditionally dominated by screw compressors.

Even in medium and small flow conditions, the magnetic bearing compressor demonstrates significant advantages, including:

  • Higher energy efficiency

  • Lower maintenance costs

  • Stable oil-free compressed air supply

In coal mining operations, clean compressed air is critical not only for powering equipment but also for ensuring operational safety.

Because underground environments often contain flammable gases and coal dust, the use of oil-free compressed air systems plays an important role in improving overall mine safety.
